Dean Fan Hengxin of Guangzhou House Pet Hospital Led Hands-on Training for Veterinary Assistant Skills

On August 18, 2026, the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Faculty Party Branch of the College of Animal Science and Technology, Zhongkai University of Agriculture and Engineering, organized a "Veterinary Assistant Skills" hands-on training for the Class of 2023 animal medicine majors. The training was organized and planned by the company's founder and Party Branch Secretary Prof. Cong Feng, and invited Dean Fan Hengxin of Guangzhou House Pet Hospital as the lead instructor, conducting systematic practical training around standard operating techniques commonly used in pet clinics.

Dean Fan Hengxin: Bringing Real Clinical Skills into the Classroom

As the dean of Guangzhou House Pet Hospital, who is deeply engaged on the frontline of pet clinical practice, Fan Hengxin has rich experience in canine and feline clinical diagnosis and treatment. Invited to enter the university classroom this time, he selflessly imparted the technical standards he has honed through countless clinical practices, helping students turn classroom theory into real hands-on skills through a "hands-on demonstration, one-on-one guidance" approach.

The training closely followed the core skills of pet clinical assistants, and Dean Fan Hengxin designed a total of five practical training modules:

1. Safe Animal Restraint Standards

Starting from animal welfare and personal safety, Dean Fan Hengxin systematically explained the key points of manual and instrumental restraint for dogs and cats in different body postures, emphasizing the operating principle of "assess first, approach next, control steadily," laying a safety foundation for subsequent invasive operations.

2. Multi-site Venipuncture Practice for Dogs and Cats

Dean Fan Hengxin demonstrated, against anatomical charts, the localization and needle angles of commonly used blood collection sites such as the cephalic, jugular and femoral veins, guided students in groups to complete standardized blood collection on models and training animals, and corrected needle-holding and hemostasis techniques one by one.

3. Indwelling Needle Puncture Practice

As the core session of this training, Dean Fan Hengxin focused on breaking down key technical nodes such as indwelling needle selection, puncture angle, blood-return judgment, catheter advancement and fixation, and reviewed common clinical mistakes such as "difficulty advancing the catheter" and "fluid leakage" one by one, ensuring every student mastered the standardized process.

4. Standardized Intramuscular / Intraperitoneal Injection

Centering on the routes of administration for common drugs, Dean Fan Hengxin demonstrated site selection, dose conversion and aseptic operation standards for intramuscular and intraperitoneal injections in dogs and cats, reinforcing the clinical awareness that "aseptic concepts run through the whole process."

5. Clinical Microscopy (Blood Smears, Fecal Exam) Practice

Under Dean Fan Hengxin's guidance, students completed blood smear preparation and interpretation, and fecal parasite and digestive product examinations under the microscope, initially linking laboratory diagnostic skills with clinical cases.

Real dogs and cats for hands-on practice, with individual feedback and immediate correction

The training site was lively. A major highlight of this training was the provision of multiple healthy dogs and cats for students to take turns practicing hands-on, with each skill completed on real animals. Students rotated in groups and repeatedly practiced on live animals, while Dean Fan Hengxin gave individual feedback and immediate correction throughout. Everyone said that this "real" hands-on training was more "satisfying," giving them greater confidence to step into clinical posts in the future.

Prof. Cong Feng: Party Building Leading, Practice Educating People

This training is a vivid practice of the Faculty Party Branch's "Party building + education." The branch secretary and company founder Prof. Cong Feng said that the branch will continue to leverage its fighting-bastion role, transform professional advantages into educational effectiveness, continuously enrich the carriers of practice-based education, and help raise the quality of animal medicine talent cultivation to a new level.

Guangzhou Qianxun Biotechnology Co., Ltd. has long been deeply engaged in the field of animal disease diagnosis and vaccine development, and actively promotes industry-university-research integration. In this training, company founder Prof. Cong Feng acted as a bridge, bringing frontline pet clinical experts face-to-face with university students—another instance of the company's philosophy of "serving animal health and giving back to industry education" being put into practice.

Conclusion

We thank Dean Fan Hengxin for his wholehearted teaching, and also thank the College of Animal Science and Technology, Zhongkai University of Agriculture and Engineering for providing the valuable platform.
